How to Choose a Timber Verandah Post: Comparing V1–V7
Choose a timber verandah post by comparing three things: the decorative profile, the overall dimensions and the position of the square sections. In our Melbourne-made V1–V7 range, V1–V3 have longer turned layouts, V4–V5 place the turning above a longer square base, V6 offers a straighter profile and V7 is a decorative column-style design. Check each product photograph and section diagram before selecting.
Start with the shape you want to match
For a replacement post, look at the existing verandah as a whole and then at the individual details. Compare the outline of the turning, the square ends and the point where any handrail meets the post. Two posts can have the same overall length and width but look different because their decorative sections start and finish in different places.
For a new verandah, compare the designs with your planned railing layout and the proportions of the space. Our installed verandah post gallery can help you picture the finished setting. Confirm the required dimensions and suitability with your builder.
V1, V2 and V3: longer turned layouts
The V1, V2 and V3 turned timber verandah posts combine longer decorative turned sections with square ends. Use the full-length photographs to compare the shape of the turning, then check the section diagrams to see where the square ends sit.
When matching an existing post, compare the individual curves and transitions as well as the overall outline. A broadly similar turned post may still have different details or section proportions.
V4 and V5: upper turning and longer square base
The V4 and V5 turned verandah posts place their decorative turning above a longer square lower section. Compare these layouts when the position of the lower square section is important to the appearance of your verandah or its railing arrangement.
Do not assume a handrail will line up simply because the post is the correct overall length. Record the connection height and compare it with the square-section layout. Confirm any custom section lengths with our workshop.
V6 and V7: straighter profile or decorative column
The V6 timber verandah post provides a straighter decorative layout with square ends. Compare its photograph and section guide if you are looking for a different outline from the longer turned designs.
The V7 decorative timber verandah post has a column-style design. Review the individual product page and available options, and check the arrangement of the column details, base and any handrail block against your project.
Check length, width and section positions separately
The overall length is only one part of choosing a post. Write down the square-section width, the lengths of the square ends and the position of the decorative centre. A square-section measurement is different from the narrower diameter of a turned section.
For example, the V4 product page lists overall lengths of 2400, 2700, 3000, 3300 and 3600 mm, with 88, 112 and 135 mm square sections. Always check the choices on the individual product page; do not assume every design has the same options or section layout.
Compare the full profile with the product photographs.
Check the overall length and square-section dimensions.
Check where the decorative section starts and finishes.
Record handrail positions and any other connections.
Confirm dimensions that are hidden, damaged or uncertain.
For a replacement project, follow our guide to measuring a replacement timber verandah post before sending an enquiry.
When to ask about custom matching
If the standard profile or dimensions do not match your existing post, send clear square-on photographs, close-ups and a labelled sketch through our custom verandah post matching service. Include the quantity and delivery postcode, and identify any measurements you cannot confirm.
Our team can review the information and advise on standard designs or a custom matching quote. A photograph helps describe the shape, but written dimensions are needed to describe the finished post accurately.
Plan the finish before installation
Our standard timber verandah posts are made in Melbourne from LOSP-treated pine. Read the painting and care instructions before installation, together with the guarantee conditions. Check delivery and ordering information as part of your planning.
