How to Measure a Replacement Timber Verandah Post
To match a replacement timber verandah post, record its overall length, square-section width and the lengths of the sections above and below the decorative detail. Add clear photographs of the whole post and its profile. Together, these details help our Melbourne workshop compare your existing post with standard designs or assess a custom matching enquiry.
1. Photograph the complete post
Take a square-on photograph showing the full post from top to bottom. Include close-ups of the turning, grooves and any other decorative details. If several posts need replacing, photograph each different design and note how many you need.
A photo shows the shape, but written measurements are still needed. Perspective can make a post look wider or shorter than it is.
2. Record the overall length and square section
Write down the overall post length in millimetres. Measure both faces of the square section and label the dimensions clearly. The square-section width is different from the narrower diameter of a turned section, so include both measurements if they are relevant to your design.
3. Measure the layout of the decorative sections
Record the length of the top square section, decorative centre and bottom square section. A simple labelled sketch helps show where each section starts and ends. Note the position of handrails or other connections that need to line up with the new post.
Check that your section measurements add up to the overall length. If part of the post is concealed or difficult to measure, explain that in your enquiry instead of guessing.
4. Compare the standard post designs
Browse our timber verandah post range and compare the photographs, available dimensions and section diagrams. A similar-looking profile may have a different arrangement of square and turned sections. Open the individual product details before choosing.
If a standard profile does not match, use our custom verandah post matching service to send your photos and dimensions for review.
5. Send a complete quote enquiry
Full-post photographs and close-ups of the decorative profile.
Overall length and square-section dimensions in millimetres.
Top, centre and bottom section lengths, with a labelled sketch.
Handrail positions or other details that affect the layout.
Quantity required and delivery postcode.
Any measurements you cannot confirm.
Confirm the required finished dimensions and suitability for your project with your builder before ordering. This checklist helps describe the design; it is not a specification for structural use.
Prepare for the new posts
Before installation, read our painting and care instructions for LOSP-treated timber posts. Planning the preparation and finish in advance helps you follow the product requirements when your order arrives.
