Identify the details before choosing a period label
Two posts of the same height can look very different. Record the square width and depth, the top and bottom square lengths, where the turning starts, the sequence of rings and collars, any fluting or chamfers, and the height of the rail connection. Photograph an undamaged neighbouring post if the original is incomplete.
A house's period alone does not identify the correct post. Alterations and previous replacements can also affect what survives. Where the work is subject to heritage controls, check the intended replacement with your relevant adviser before ordering.
